Sustainable and Green Logistics in a Circular Economy. As Governments look to implement Green initiatives, driven by Carbon emission output, the Logistics sector is being put under pressure. Customers are asking Shippers and Importers to find “better” ways (environmentally friendly) to move goods from A to B. This is creating a snowball effect for Logistics Companies, many of whom are simply not ready to offer Shippers and Importers a sustainable way to move their cargo. Governments have rushed to force Industries to move now and move quick to reduce carbon emissions. But, they haven’t provided any real tools to support any sector other than Energy and Automotive. It’s important that the Logistics industry gets ahead of the curve. It’s time to change mindsets and get serious. If they don’t, they will miss out on an increasing number of businesses who now request their suppliers to have a sustainability management program or policy implemented. The Shipping and Air industry has set a zero carbon emissions target by 2050 (aligned to the Paris Agreement). Freight Forwarders cannot simply wait until Ship owners or airlines make the investment required in Biofuels and LNG, Freight Forwarders need to start asking for this. Requesting rates and services only on alternative fuel powered vessels or aircraft is one option. Providing clients with Carbon emission quotes rather than rate only proposals. Let’s DRIVE the change — don’t sit waiting. We cannot think “this is not my problem now”, its 30 years away. We must participate in the building blocks and foundation to see this realized NOW.
